Incoming and Outgoing Runner
Tips on the Down sweep:
Lane and Baton position of incoming runner
- Upon command or when the in-coming runner hits the mark, out-going runner begins to sprint.
- Out-going runner reaches back with receiving hand almost parallel to track.
- Palm is facing up, forming a "V", with thumb turned towards torso.
- In-coming runner places baton in receiver's hand in a downward "sweeping" motion.
- Out-going runner takes baton from in-coming runner.
Tips on the Down sweep:
Lane and Baton position of incoming runner
- the lead off runner or first leg runner will have the baton in their right hand and stay on the inside of the lane
- the backstretch or second leg runner will take the baton and carry it in the left hand and stay on the outside of the lane
- the curve runner or third leg runner will take the baton and carry it in the right hand and stay on the inside of the lane
- the anchor or fourth leg runner will take the baton and carry it in the left hand and stays on the outside when receiving the baton
